Brief chiropractic history
Chiropractic was born in the USA as a profession different and distinct from allopathic medicine. D.D. Palmer is considered to have discovered chiropractic in 1895. His son B.J. Palmer soon joined him in investigating and developing this new approach to health.
Following a series of scientific research investigations, the Palmers realized how important the relationship was between the spine, the nervous system, and health.
Over time, those investigations gave birth to a university career with its own doctoral degree. Specific legislation was also enacted for this new profession.
Chiropractic expanded overtime to the other American states as well as to Canada. Soon chiropractic was introduced to Europe as well as the rest of the world.
Some European states already have chiropractic as a healthy alternative to allopathic medicine. Spain, with the opening of the first Spanish chiropractic university, awaits legal recognition as a distinct profession.
The spine and the nervous system
In order to understand chiropractic it is necessary to have a basic knowledge of the spine and nervous system.
A healthy spine presents a vertical structure when seen from the front or back, as well as 3 characteristic curves when viewed from the side.
The nervous system, due to the aligned shape of the spine, is well protected and also allows humans to walk straight and support the stress of gravity efficiently.
The nervous system, with the nerves that lead to all body parts, is responsible for the correct functioning of all body systems. As an example, after eating it controls digestion of food just as it enables activities such as driving, walking, seeing and hearing. Also most importantly, the nervous system provides a defense from injuries or diseases through the immunologic system
Subluxation and its effects (pain and dysfunction)
The bones of the spine (vertebrae) may misalign due to hits, falls, stress, incorrect posture, traffic accidents...Many times the misalignment occurs without realizing in the same moment in time.
These misaligned vertebrae, named subluxations, often injure the nervous system. This then leads to health problems and a state of dis-ease.
Every person can suffer those health problems in different ways such as migraines, vertigo, back pain, herniated disc, torticollis, whiplash injuries, jaw pain, scoliosis, sport injuries, fibromyalgia, fatigue…
