In Park animal species are most visible and frequent birds, but there are also interesting and varied species of vertebrates and invertebrates.
The fish are most abundant carp, eel and smooth. The presence of fartet (Aphanius iberus), small fish endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Amfibios as frogs and toads are found everywhere, especially in areas of water sweeter.
Among the interesting reptiles can highlight the leper tortoise in some gaps sweet, lizards and eslizón in the coastal dunes.
The mammal more typical of wetlands, as well as the water rat, it is the otter, often until mid-century, and rare, but this, at present, thanks to a reintroduction project.
In 1987 also reintroduced the stag. The birds can be seen throughout the park, so far has been observed 330 different species, 93 of which nest in the area.
In migration season, there are everywhere ardeidas, limícolas, fumareles and terns.
Sometimes, flamingos and more rarely, cranes, morito and bittern. It is in these times of transition, when the fen play a major role as a place of shelter, food and rest for thousands of waterbirds, especially in spring when the tramontana closes the Pyrenees.
The vegetation presents special features. The main vegetation types are: Salines of soils, vegetation in the sand and vegetation in fen.

The Aiguamolls Empordà formerly occupied almost the entire plain of the Bay of Roses and baix Ter. That vast area was disappearing due to the expansion of agriculture (rice fields in the first phase) and ramadera.
Extensive pond Castelló with its three islands, and ponds Siurana, Vilacolum, Riumors, Bellcaire, Ullastret and Pals and only recorded in history (documents the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) either insinuan when the rainy season and the waters returned to fill their former domains.
In the middle of this century appeared another factor degradation: the construction of tourist facilities. Interesting and extensive areas disappeared converted into housing estates and marinas, and surely would have led to the disappearance of the wetlands in the region if in the year 1976 was not initiated an extensive campaign with the slogan "Els últims aiguamolls Empordà, perill "trying to tell the people of the value of the ponds. This campaign is very popular in Catalonia and arrived at the international level, culminated on October 13, 1983 when the Parliament of Catalonia unanimously approved of the law on declaration of "Paratges Naturals d'Interès National Reserves i Integrals dels Aiguamolls Empordà ".
In Natural Park owns the only ponds l'Alt Empordà; Those of baix Empordà have not yet shown any legal protects.
With this legal protection, aiguamolls Empordà have become an area of special interest and attraction in the heart of the Costa Brava, both for academics and for nature lovers, Catalans and strangers.
